convexity/concavity

fall 2022 - 10 weeks

3d representation

a sculptural project based on the practices of Rowena Reed Kostellow. involving axial movement, balance, and craftsmanship, the form was carved from a casted block of plaster over almost 8 weeks. the shape was sketched through plasticine clay models and studied with drawings. then carved with traditional tools to achieve the intended shape.

charcoal and newsprint empathic drawings were used to study the shapes and movement of the plastacine sketch models before moving on to the final material

semi-final model was created to use as a guide when carving the plaster with the expectation that it would be adjusted further while using a removing method of creating.

it was important to focus on the axial movement of the piece and keeping it dynamic while still balanced.
