senior thesis - edible futures

native flavors is a candy brand that uses native and local plants as the main source of flavor. the packaging prominently displays these plants, with the goal of educating urban dwellers about their importance. the ultimate aim is to strengthen the bond between people and nature by promoting recognition and understanding of these plants.

research

a survey was distributed in different neighborhoods throughout all five boroughs of new york city to make sure there was a diverse representation. this was to ensure a wide range of perspectives from people of different ages, backgrounds and lengths of residency in the city.

cultural probe

a daily question was sent to the participants to answer, focusing on identifying common plants in nyc that are also edible. many struggled with this task, with the highest correct response being 2 out of 7, including a hesitant “a maybe?”. one participant later made a connection between a plant in her daily diary and a question from the previous day, showing increased awareness just from seeing a picture once. “i never noticed this tree in particular but i think the berries look like the plant in the question yesterday. am i right?” - clare
